Addressing poverty and inequity

Icon showing a hand helping anotherThe extremely high level of poverty that Rochester faces is at sharp contrast to the thousands of available jobs that are a ladder out of poverty and into the middle class.

Quality employment is one of the most effective, lasting ways to reduce poverty. As the provider of nine out of 10 jobs worldwide, the private sector can take the lead in the fight against poverty and inequality by actively creating employment and advancement opportunities for those living in poverty in our community. While implementing such a strategy requires investment, companies are likely to benefit over the long term from access to a largely untapped talent pool, an enhanced brand reputation, and an ability to demonstrate additional social value.

Through Greater Rochester Chamber Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion events and trainings, we are actively encouraging best practices to provide employment opportunities with the potential to create pathways out of poverty. We are also involved in a number of community initiatives tackling this issue.

Greater Rochester Anti-Poverty Resources

Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative (RMAPI) - A community-wide effort to reduce poverty in the Rochester and Monroe County region by 50 percent over the next 15 years. This initiative involves the efforts and input of nearly 1,000 people in the region, including more than 200 volunteers on committees and workgroups, more than 800 community members who attended a town hall meeting or have participated in surveys.
